This whole project started way back when I was in college, and it just has sort of grown and morphed into something that I felt as though I was finally ready to put out there in a presentation. I call it the Ocean Springs Branding Project because the idea in my head was to follow the entire design concept that colleges go through when they rebrand and build their brands.
I'm not talking simple logo redesign here. This is meant to be a brand package for the entire district. Logos, word marks, scripts, alternates, typefaces, the whole nine yards. When this happens at the collegiate level, it's in depth more than the average person would just know. Design teams consisting of graphic designers, historians, and storytellers are sent to various campuses where they live and ingratiate themselves into the culture for years as they come up with a brand that not only represents their customer, it is their customer. The brand isn't just for athletics, or academics, or extracurriculars. With every email sent, every t-shirt, poster, or ticket printed, there is an opportunity provided for the brand to strengthen or weaken. Following this guide will ensure the visual elements are consistent with each other. It transcends departments and school buildings, building one cohesive identity that no matter what platform it's on, it represents the one brand. As a little bit of all three of those in myself, I think I may have finally created that brand.
The kid growing up in the community and going to school gave me a unique background on the subject matter, the historian in my helped me do my research thoroughly (not to mention I'm a 5th generation Greyhound with an extended family of 50+ people who also are Greyhounds spanning from around the early 1930s all the way through cousins who range from seniors to kindergarten in 2025). The early artist turned graphic designer honed the skills I needed to bring what was in my head into digital reality, and the storyteller in me, both literally and through imagery, will hopefully let me do it justice to you, reader. That is my inspiration and idea behind this.
As of 2020, it's now my pleasure to be the graphic designer, design influencer, and brand creator for
Ocean Springs Athletics. You can follow the history below.
